Melanna and Ethan’s engagement session in Columbia, Missouri felt like stepping into another era. Inspired by the elegance of the 1950s, they wanted images that would feel timeless. Photos that could transport them back in time whenever they look through their album. With their October wedding at Emerson Fields planned for next fall, their engagement session was the perfect opportunity to capture classic portraits that reflect their love story.

As a Columbia Missouri photographer, sessions like this are always special because they blend personal storytelling with meaningful locations. For Melanna and Ethan’s 90-minute session, we started on the campus of the University of Missouri, one of Columbia’s most iconic backdrops. The historic architecture and tree-lined paths added the perfect vintage charm to match their 1950s inspiration.

Melanna arrived in a stunning white gown that felt effortlessly classic, while Ethan wore a sharp black suit with a black vest. Their outfits immediately set the tone of elegant, romantic, and timeless. As we explored campus, golden fall light filtered through the trees, creating soft, cinematic moments that felt straight out of an old film.

For the second half of the session, we headed downtown to the historic The Tiger Hotel. Melanna changed into a sophisticated black dress, which perfectly complemented the hotel’s vintage atmosphere. The contrast between her white gown and black dress created two distinct looks within the same session—both equally timeless.

A Love Story Years in the Making

Melanna and Ethan’s story began long before their engagement photos. They’ve actually known each other since kindergarten, growing up side by side throughout school. While Ethan admits he had a crush on her in eighth grade (and was initially friend-zoned!), their relationship gradually grew stronger through friendship.

Everything changed during COVID when they began spending more time together with mutual friends. Their shared love of The Lord of the Rings movies became an unexpected way to spend hours together, watching the films and enjoying each other’s company. When the last movie ended, Melanna suggested another marathon—just to keep their time together going.

By March of their junior year, Melanna realized she wanted their friendship to become something more. She told Ethan he could ask her dad for permission to date her. Without hesitation, he ran through a thunderstorm to her house to ask. That night marked the beginning of their relationship—and they’ve been together ever since.

A Thoughtful and Memorable Proposal

Ethan proposed during a family trip to Ha Ha Tonka State Park. With help from Melanna’s mom, the family planned what appeared to be a casual photo outing while her brother took senior photos.

At first, Ethan planned to propose near the park’s famous castle ruins, but a newly installed fence changed the plan. Instead, they made their way to a natural rock bridge nearby. The moment felt right—the light, the scenery, and the quiet setting created the perfect atmosphere.

During a family photo, Ethan knelt down beside Melanna with the ring. She thought he was just giving her bunny ears for the picture and kept telling him to stop, until she realized he was proposing. Although Ethan admits he forgot everything he planned to say, the moment was perfect all the same.

A Ring with Generations of History

Melanna’s engagement ring carries deep meaning. In Ethan’s family, future daughters-in-law are invited to choose one of his mother’s rings (other than her wedding band). Melanna selected a ring that once belonged to Ethan’s grandmother and later became his mother’s engagement ring—making it a third-generation engagement ring.

Looking Ahead to Their Wedding Day

Melanna and Ethan’s engagement session captured not only beautiful portraits but also the story of two people who have grown together for most of their lives. Their love is rooted in friendship, patience, and shared experiences—from movie marathons to dancing and quiet nights together.

I cannot wait to photograph their wedding next fall at Emerson Fields, where these timeless engagement images will likely appear throughout their celebration.
